«The academy provides time and space to ask questions: What does my dream have to do with that of others?»*

We like to think of the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo as a unique collective of singularities: artists from a variety of backgrounds, countries, fields, genders and generations come together to create what they believe to be the ideal space for the development of their practice.

Artistic practice is at the core of the Academy of Fine Art’s education. We work across media, disciplines and approaches, dealing with formal or material concerns as much as post-conceptual, social or political issues. Our studies are organized into five areas:

a) independent practice, focussing on studio work and individual tutorials
b) group critiques, where work is discussed collectively
c) issues in practice and theory, including annually changing thematic courses and study trips
d) writing practice, which includes artist writing and publishing
e) exhibition practice in our galleries on site and externally

Currently, the Academy of Fine Art has 105 students within the BA and MA programme, 4 research fellows, 18 faculty members, and over 80 guest teachers each year.

As part of the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway’s largest educational institution for artists, our Academy offers the opportunity for art students to collaborate on site with dancers, choreographers, actors, dramaturges and theatre directors, as well as graphic, fashion and interior designers, specialists in ceramics, textile, printmaking, metall work, and many other fields. Our Medialab, one among many workshops, has unique facilities for 8mm and 16mm film development, analog and digital photography, and digital 3D printing. For a full overview over our workshops, please follow this link.

We collaborate with numerous institutions across Norway and internationally. Kunstnernes Hus is one of our main partners, hosting our gallery space Akademirommet and Open Forum as well as studios for eight graduates in the first year after their studies. Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Kunsthall Oslo, Cinemateket, Ny Musikk, and many artist-run centers are among our partners in Oslo, as well as the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO), the Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH), and the Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad.

The International Art Academy in Ramallah is our closest partner internationally and we organize collaborative projects in Palestine and Norway each year. We also have a residency in Paris and an extensive network of partner institutions within KUNO, Erasmus, Share and other academic exchange networks.
